Astronautical Congress

I had the privilege of participating in a session at the Astronaut Congress in Baku on the 6th of October, “Does everyone Really Love Space Activity?”, where we explored the crucial role of communications and storytelling in the space industry. It was an enlightening experience, and I’d like to share some insights, drawing parallels from my experience in dealing with fintech companies.

In the world of fintech, as in the space tech industry, there’s a tendency to focus heavily on production and technology while sometimes overlooking the power of effective communication. Some fintech companies, like REVOLUT, have faced regulatory challenges in the UK because British regulators struggled to understand their corporate culture. This underscores the importance of innovation, clear communication, and narrative building.

The space industry often faces a similar perception challenge. It’s sometimes seen as an industry of dreamers, detached from the critical importance of space technology in addressing pressing global issues. Yet, the reality is quite different. Space technology plays a pivotal role in tackling climate change, revolutionizing agriculture, ensuring security, and providing the fundamental telecommunications infrastructure that underpins virtually every industry today.

Policy Changes:

Communication and storytelling can be powerful tools in influencing policy changes. When the public understands the profound impact of space technology on our planet and everyday lives, they become advocates for supportive policies.

Funding Support:

In the fintech and space sectors alike, attracting investment relies on conveying a clear vision and potential returns. Compelling storytelling can inspire investors and secure the necessary capital for growth and innovation.

Workforce Development:

Attracting and retaining top talent is a shared challenge. Employees want to be part of organizations with compelling narratives and values. Storytelling helps forge a sense of purpose and engagement in both sectors.

The space and fintech industries share common challenges when it comes to communication. Both can benefit immensely from harnessing the power of storytelling to bridge the gap between complex concepts and broader understanding. By doing so, they can mobilize support, secure resources, and cultivate the skilled workforce needed to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Let’s remember that the dreamers of today often become the visionaries of tomorrow, and their innovations can transform our world.

I invite everybody to join in the conversation about the crucial role of communication and storytelling in the respective industries. By sharing our experiences and insights, we can collectively unlock the potential for positive change, innovation, and growth.

Let’s continue this dialogue and explore how we can better communicate the importance of our work, whether it’s in space technology, fintech, or any other field. Together, we can bridge the gap between innovation and understanding, inspire policy changes, secure funding, and nurture a skilled workforce.
